1.) There are four social classes listed in the textbook: lower, middle, working and upper classes. The lower class has the lowest amount of education and have the most employment problems. (Knox,2019) The middle class is the largest social class and includes business professionals and bussinessmen. (Knox, 2019) The upper class is the wealthiest and have many assets including property, stocks, bonds, and money. (Knox, 2019) Growing up in what would be considered the middle class, I was not held from public education, always had food on the table and got new name brand clothes every season. Although money was available, it was never fully accessible and my parents struggled frequently to provide all that was needed. My parents worked non stop and many holidays were spent without my mother who worked retail and barely made enough to feel like she was contributing.

I feel that social class influences behavior towards certain social classes based off of their money or assets accumulated. A person of the upper class may receive more opportunity based off of their establishments versus a person of the lower class who has little establishments. In the text it says that the “impoverished don’t have access or money to acquire the resources they need to meet their basic necessities”.(Knox, 2019) This makes me think of the lost opportunities of people with no transportation. Feels like a “catch-22”. They need a job to buy a vehicle and they need a vehicle to get a job. This makes changing ones social status difficult, also known as social mobility.

2.)Social stratification is the classification of persons into groups based on shared socio-economic conditions such as wealth or power, (Knox, J. 2019). There are four different class groups that individuals are categorized in. You have the upper class, middle class, working-class, and lower class. The middle class is considered the largest class in the United States. The middle class is people who fall between the upper and worker class, (Knox, J. 2019). In the community, I live in and the church I attend we have individuals who interact well with one another. Regardless of their economic status, they see each other as equal. They don’t deem themselves as being better than the less fortunate. The community comes together and has an outreach that consists of giving to lower-class families. The middle class/working class has not forgotten what it is like to be on the other side. When you have experienced lack before it will cause you to have empathy for others. As with any other community, we have some individuals that will not socialize with you if you are not in their class. They will look at you as being beneath them.

The way I believe Christians should address the idea of social class is the same way Jesus did. He sees everyone as equal regardless of what they have. In the eyes of Jesus, no one was greater or lesser. He talked to the poor as well as the sinners. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus”, (Galatians 3:28 NKJV).  As Christians when you have the love of God in your heart, it will cause you to see people through the lens of Christ regardless of their class status.
