31 Aug DSM Discussion
Some general information will be given regarding the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM-V) used to diagnose people with mental disorders. The following is a case study to be used for the assignment:
Eldred is a 24-year-old man who has been unemployed for 2 years. He was let go because of downsizing in his company. Six months prior to coming in for therapy, his wife left him. He lives in California, and most of his family lives in New York. Eldred complained of daily headaches and dizziness, but has no insurance to go to a doctor. He told his therapist that he has difficulty getting out of bed in the morning and no longer is applying for any jobs. He rarely goes out of his apartment. He fears eviction as his unemployment benefits are about to run out. He told his therapist he thinks about suicide, and has considered various plans. His therapist diagnosed him with Major Depressive Disorder.
- Refer to the . Read the “Major Depressive Disorder” located on pages 160-167 (these are the numbers of the actual pages in the document).
- Use the DSM-5 to outline symptoms highlighted by Eldred’s therapist noted in the case, and think about additional questions you would want answered if you were working with Eldred.
