Domestic Terrorism has been described as "Violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature" (FBI, 2020, par. 1).

Incidents of domestic terrorism may involve many different weapons and targets and be influenced by many different factors.

To effectively address the threat of domestic terrorism, officials responsible for securing potential targets must have a research-based perspective of the actual threat.

Some questions to ask in developing realistic situational awareness of the threats posed by domestic terrorists include:

• What are the major tactics and targets used by domestic terrorists, and how have they evolved over time?
• How do tactics and targets differ by far-right, far-left, and Salafi-jihadist extremists?
• What data is most useful for security and law enforcement managers in developing plans to address the domestic terrorism threat?

You are an intelligence analyst for a municipal police department. Your chief has asked for a briefing on the current threats posed by domestic terrorists in the United States. Using the above questions as a basis for your research, prepare a brief for the chief.
