In September, our regiment began to assemble as a first step toward moving to the front. On Dec. 1, I was assigned as a medic with an infantry company in the small village of Sommocolonia in the mountains above the Serchio River valley. The night before we entered combat, we were attached to the 92nd Division. Gen. Almond made a speech to welcome us. He said he didn’t ask for us and didn’t want us; we had too many high-ranking colored officers.
