We’ve talked about Nature vs. Nurture. We’ve also explored some ideas about opportunities which some children may or may not have that might affect their outcomes. After reading the text and watching the videos under our Week 4 Lesson, talk about your thoughts about how where a child is born and what their circumstances are might affect their development starting at birth (or even sooner). What risk factors might some children be facing? What part does society play in contributing to or mitigating those risk factors? What might be the generational affects? What about the effects of access to health care for the mother on the health of the child? How does culture, society, and stereotypes impact childbirth.

153. Week Three Poster or Check List Assignment- (Safe Kids)
The chapters explained that are several things to explore in childcare settings, but for educators their primary role is to ensure safety for all children.
Go to the Safe Kids Links to an external site. website, (opens in a new window). Scroll down to the bottom of the page, click on “Safety Tips”, examine the many safety topics and tips. You can create either an attractive poster providing safety information for parents and staff or create a safety check list chart that can be used in an early childhood program. (Think about preventing hazards and keeping children safe. Just as with all other areas of childcare, highlight policies for injury prevention, what to do, and procedures outlining how best to do it!)
