For this presentation, you will become the expert in working with a special group of your choosing (for example, some teachers work in behavior units with students diagnosed as ‘emotionally disturbed,’ others work with ELLs, others are concerned about ADHD, giftedness, homelessness, poverty, etc.). You will develop a presentation to be delivered at a conference designed for professional development for general education teachers (teachers without your expertise). In this presentation, you should include the following information as it applies:
- The special group you have chosen
- A definition of the special group
- Theoretical perspectives that speak to development and your strategies
- Any diagnostic information you, as an expert, feel should be shared, such as symptoms, traits, characteristics
- How is it determined that someone is a part of the special group (pediatrician, psychiatrist, diagnosticians, educators, etc.)
- Statistics
- Is it genetic, environmental, unknown
- Laws related to the group addressed
- What families can do to help these students achieve academic success
- What schools can do to help these students achieve academic success
- What teachers can do to help these students achieve academic success
- What communities can do to help these students achieve academic success
- Specific classroom strategies the teacher may implement
- Equipment or materials that should be available
- Local, state, and national resources available to help address the needs of the student and the family
- Professional development resources to help teachers continue to stay current with research and appropriate strategies in working with the group
