ANALYSIS: This is a hospital with a large group of physicians closely tied to it, both economically and geographically. It is also operating in an area of intense competition and tight cost controls. The fact that 90% to 95% of the hospital’s compensation is case-based (DRG’s) and not procedure-based has a profound impact on management motivation. Intense support for the CQI implementation was provided by the lead physician and his staff at HCA corporate headquarters.
