One of the 5 pillars of SEL (social-emotional learning) are

1. Self-awareness

Students learn to understand their own strengths and weaknesses, as well as see their behavior’s influence on other people. An example of this in practice would be coaching and simulation sessions where students would recognize how certain actions may affect others so that they can learn how to perceive their own feelings as well as what other people may be feeling.

SEL self-awareness

What is Self-Awareness? The first main skill associated with Social Emotional Learning is self-awareness. … It is the ability to accurately assess one’s strengths and limitations, with a well-grounded sense of confidence, optimism, and a “growth mindset.” In short, self-awareness is the ability to understand one’s self.

When we have a better understanding of ourselves, we are able to experience ourselves as unique and separate individuals. This empowers us to make changes and build on our areas of strength, as well as identify areas where we would like to make improvements. Self-awareness is often the first step to setting goals.

What is an example of self-awareness?

An example of self-awareness is your ability to distinguish your own beliefs from others. You can step back and ask yourself, Am I being true to myself at this moment? I spent much of my life feeling like I needed to fit into feminine norms.
