DEFINITION OF COMMUNICATION TERMS

Communication – the process by which information is transmitted and understood between two or more people.

Grapevine – an unstructured and informal network founded on social relationships rather than organizational charts or job descriptions.

IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNICATION

Helps coordinate work activities

Serves as vehicle for organizational learning

Critical ingredient for decision-making

Helps change others’ behavior through influence

Helps with employee well-being

COMMUNICATION CHANNELS

Verbal –uses words and occurs through spoken or written channels

Nonverbal – any part of communication that does not use words

VERBAL COMUNICATION

Includes face to face, email, letters, memos, instant messaging.

Preferred medium for:

Sending well-defined information for decision-making

Coordinating work

Problems with verbal communication.

NONVERBAL COMUNICATION

Includes actions, facial gestures, physical distance and even silence.
