Your manager was happy with your proposed qualitative design to better understand how to motivate employee performance. However, over the last 40 hours since you first discussed the plan with your manager, you are wondering if a different qualitative design would possibly yield better results. Consider each of the core qualitative research designs supported by GCU. How would the information gained from conducting the study differ from design to design? Explain. Which of the GCU core qualitative designs do you believe would best serve the purpose of the study? Why? Why would the other designs not be as effective? Explain.

Note: Rather than providing insights into the topics of employee perceptions or employee retention, focus your discussion post on the research methodology and design, to resolve this applied research example.

Based on the research question, "How and why are staff members motivated?" I believe the best qualitative method would be to use the narrative design. Narrative inquiry is a qualitative-research that collects experiences from individuals and groups of people. This is the best research method to perform because we are asking each individual staff member to share their experiences within the workplace that motivates them and how they reach the place of motivation. After collecting the individual responses of staff members, the individual experiences will become a grouped data collection piece. Greenberger, Maul, Walker, and McClendon (2021) wrote that in this form of data collection staff members will use words in place of numbers to describe their experiences, consensus of staff members experiences will be acknowledged by the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of staff members as a collective and as individuals, and there will also be an increased sensitivity to the diverse responses that are provided by staff members. Phenomenological Design would not be the best fit because this method interprets the thoughts, feelings, and experiences of staff members which could stain the research if the researcher interprets with biased words or words that do not authentically represent staff members. Staff motivation is a continous thing and therefore, descriptive design would not be the best form of data collection because Greenberger, Maul, Walker, and McClendon (2021) noted that descriptive studies are useful when there is not a lot of description available. We are looking for "meat" useful and crucial information to build upon staff motivation and retention and to reduce employee turnover rates.
