The terrifying news that a suspect in Southern California made threats to blow up an Islamic institution using his own first name is frightening. Thinking about the underlying reasons for violence of this nature, I came to the conclusion that prejudice or hatred against the Islamic community played a key contributing role in this tragedy. The things I believe we should put first in order to prevent similar incidents are stepping up security, encouraging tolerance, and educating the people. Public health groups need to lead the charge in these initiatives to fight against prejudice and racial bias, foster social cohesiveness, and provide mental health assistance to affected people. This multipronged approach might help prevent these kinds of accidents and create a safer, friendlier environment in Los Angeles and around the globe.

2. Members of anti-government group arrested in killings of Kansas women over custody battle. Four members of the anti-government group "God's Misfits" were arrested Saturday on charges of kidnapping and first-degree murder. By Sean Murphy and Heather Hollingsworth. Posted April 15, 2024. Retrieved from NBC Los AngelesLinks to an external site.

I was shocked to learn that an anti-government group known as "God's Misfits" had murdered two women in Kansas. These types of things still exist. I think the primary reasons for this violence are the organization's extreme ideology and the anti-government feelings it promoted, which had tragic repercussions for innocent victims. I believe that countering extremist ideologies through community engagement programs and mental health services for people who might be at risk of radicalization, along with supporting law enforcement's efforts to disrupt extremist networks, is necessary to prevent tragedies like these. Public health organizations may also play a significant role by addressing the underlying socioeconomic concerns, such as economic marginalization and social isolation, that contribute to radicalization. In order to reduce vulnerability to extremist ideology and boost resilience, they may develop interventions in collaboration with law enforcement and local organizations. Although not definite, this would ultimately make Los Angeles and other places more inviting and safer.

3.Gunman who opened fire atop Southern California apartment complex identified. by: Josh DuBose.Posted: Apr 15, 2024.Retrieved from KTLA. Links to an external site.

It was terrifying to learn that a gunman in Southern California had started shooting from the top of an apartment building. My impression is that the primary cause of this violence is arguments or personal grudges, although the exact cause or motive is still unclear. I believe that in order to avoid tragedies like this one in the future, it is imperative to address underlying issues, including interpersonal conflicts, mental health issues, and access to firearms. Mental health problems are mainly the root cause of these violent acts of crime. We definitely need tighter gun control legislation, improved mental health care access, and the introduction of community-based conflict resolution initiatives, which might all serve to lessen the chance of tragedies of this kind. Public health groups may also be highly beneficial in advocating for policies and programs that address the root causes of interpersonal conflict, improve mental health and wellness, and develop individualized strategies for preventing violence in our Los Angeles community.

I think there has been a disturbing global trend in the rise in crime and violence over time. Socioeconomic inequality, political unpredictability, limited access to job and educational opportunities, poor mental health support systems, and the worldwide effects of continuous conflicts and wars are some of the causes that contribute to this trend. Furthermore, globalization and technological developments have opened up new channels for criminal activity. Globally, crime and violence are probably on the rise due to a combination of these causes as well as easier access to news via several media sources. For example, the majority of the news on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok is fake and mainly serves to incite fear, which promotes anxiety.  Combating this escalation requires addressing these underlying problems and putting effective preventative measures in place. The only question is, how?

1. A 16-year-old female was found with a gunshot wound inside of a residence in Davenport Iowa. She succumbed to her injuries at the hospital where she was transferred immediately upon authorities showing up. https://www.kwqc.com/2024/03/05/teen-dies-after-shooting-davenport/Links to an external site.  (KWQC 2024)

The victim was a minor female. Her name is unable to be released due to her age. The perpetrator has yet to be found and local authorities are asking the public for information to help.

The area where the teen was found is known for juvenile activities that tend to carry a violent streak, from beatings to car thefts and many things in between. There are massive groups of teens, unsupervised, roaming the neighborhoods. Gang activity has been prevalent here and continues to show its head over the last 30 years. If I had to hypothesize what this was over I would be willing to wager it has to do with drugs and foul deals. That or jealousy is part of the equation. Until more information is brought forth from the community, pinpointing the details will be difficult. It is especially considering that the main victim has now died and can no longer provide information as to what happened.

We need to find out where these kids are getting the guns they possess. We need to hold the owners of the weapons responsible. The city needs to add patrols to areas where the teens are running around. Heavier police presence may prevent some of these types of occurrences from happening.

Public Health could recruit teens in the area to be positive role models for their fellow juveniles. The role models could work directly with the police department, ride-a-longs, and public activities like picnics and foot patrols, thus adding to the presence and perhaps swaying someone who may be thinking of doing something violent in another direction.

2. Jim Klindt is arrested for the murder of his wife Joyce Klindt. Joyce went missing from her home on March 18th of 1983. By April 16th parts of a dismembered body are found by a fisherman near East Moline Illinois. Early DNA testing confirmed that the body parts belonged to Joyce Klindt. https://qctimes.com/klindt-timeline/article_94739f4e-e55c-11df-b0cb-001cc4c002e0.htmlLinks to an external site. (QCTimes 2010)

The victim was Joyce Klindt, the wife of a local Chiropractor Jim Klindt. Jim and Joyce were well known in the community from Jim’s practice. They shared one son by the name of Bart.

The couple was very well off financially and on the verge of a possibly nasty divorce and custody battle for their one child. It’s unclear if they had a violent relationship before the disappearance of Joyce other than a recording that was submitted during the trial that helped in the 2nd-degree murder conviction of Jim Klindt.

The violence may have been prevented had Joyce had more outlets possibly to get help and leave before it got volatile. When Jim had said in a recorded conversation that he would cut her up, she should have left then.

Public Health can help by providing more options for people that are in the threat of danger to be protected with protective housing and assistance to those that need it. Maybe if Joyce could have gone somewhere else while the divorce was happening, maybe she would still be here today. We need more safehouses for woman (men) and children that cannot find their way out on their own. Resources to help them get on their own feet to reduce the chance of them going back to their abuser.

3. Michelle Jensens was senselessly murdered on a back road in Davenport Iowa in 1993. She was out on a normal drive with her friends when she found herself alone, with a sawed-off rifle pointed to the back of her head by one of them. https://www.newspapers.com/article/quad-city-times-michelle-jensen/83643247/Links to an external site. (QCTimes 1993)

The victim was a 17-year-old girl and the aggressors were her friends. Some of the people who were there when Michelle's life was taken were like family to her family.

The reason Michelle’s life was stolen was due to a terrible plan thought out by the leaders of the group to take her car and go on a crime spree. They were going to take her car and commit random robberies. Instead, they killed her, took her little bit of cash, and went to a local fast food place with it where they all dined on her dime.

The violence may have been prevented had Michelle found other people to hang out with rather than this group of guys who were constantly making bad decisions. Michelle needed to know that there were other groups she could befriend. Looking back on that time it really came down to knowing her worth and that she was worth more than the company she was keeping.

Public Health would do well to help teens, especially girls, find strength in themselves and encourage self-esteem with workshops and peer groups. We can target the schools to get active involvement.
