Your assignment this week is to put together a self-study of your mobile habits. This is not so we can know what you view or browse, rather this is more of a reflection assignment so that you may better understand the implications of this week’s topic on daily life.
You are to start this process AFTER you are done reading the assigned readings from the week. Based on what you read, and what you have learned to date, you are to review your last six weeks of mobile usage. This includes your web browsing, your app usage, texting, etc. Once you have completed this review, please answer the following questions.
1. What possible data exposures do you believe you have encountered in the last six weeks? Please be detailed in explaining the potential exposures, which app, what data was exposed, how it was exposed, etc. Make sure you exclude any private or personal information.
2. Prior to joining this course have you carried out these actions? If so, has this knowledge changed your approach to using mobile devices?
3. What can you do differently going forward to lessen your exposure?
4. Do you plan on stopping your use of any app, device, website, etc. going forward?
Your should be between 3-5 pages in length of content, i.e. excluding cover page and references.
*NOTE* If you are unable to complete this assignment due to work reasons, then you can perform an alternate assignment listed below.
Alternate Assignment:
As you saw from the readings this week and over the past six weeks, our digital lives are quite expansive. You are to research the industry that has grown up to take advantage of society’s digital leaks and breadcrumbs. Research the data merchants that buy, sell, and gather personal information. What are their goals, how much information do they have, how much do they make/charge, and what laws either help or hinder their industry? Your should be between 8-10 pages in length of content, i.e. excluding cover page and references.
The Grading Rubric linked applies to either assignment choice.
